Traffic on roads has become a problem in nearly every country in the world. What can be done to reduce the amount of traffic at a society level and at an individual level?

Sample Essay

It is undoubtedly the case that urban areas around the world increasingly suffer from congestion. In this essay, I examine the reasons for this trend and suggest some practical policies the authorities could implement to reduce the level of traffic in our cities.

The first step is to understand why traffic has increased in towns and cities. Broadly speaking, there are three main reasons for this. One is that cars have become more affordable for the average consumer, and they are no longer a luxury item, but something that most families expect to own. A second reason is that public transport has become increasingly unreliable in recent years, not least because many bus and train services have been reduced because of the difficulty in funding them. The third reason is that society has, in general, become more mobile and this means more people are prepared to commute to work by car than they were before.

There is almost certainly no one solution to this problem, given the complexity of its causes. However, one option has to be to improve the reliability of public transport to encourage people to take the bus or the train rather than get in the car. It would also be possible to discourage people from driving to work by introducing special tariffs for using the roads, especially during peak periods. A successful example of this is the congestion charge scheme in London, which has certainly reduced the level of traffic in inner-city areas.

In conclusion, there are a variety of different factors that have led to rising levels of traffic in urban areas. While it may not be possible to find a complete solution, any action should probably involve encouraging greater use of public transport and making it more expensive for the motorist to drive in urban areas.

Bonus question:

Nowadays congestion and traffic jams are a common and major problem in most cities. Some people believe it is a good idea to construct wider roads to resolve this issue. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? What can be the solution, in your opinion?

The traffic congestion has turned out to be an overriding problem for urban areas across the world. This essay argues that this growing problem is heavily rooted in the lack of well-established infrastructures and pragmatic laws, accordingly the remedy lies with authorities and raising individuals' compassion. To begin with, the traffic jam is heavily ascribed to the governments' negligence in proper finding of public services, particularly transportation fleet. Needless to say, aforementioned flaw can play an effective role in individuals' strong preference for personal vehicle instead of using the public transportation, as they conceive of public transportation as being time consuming and dull. It should not escape unnoticed that the low petrol price contribute to this problem by convincing people to commute with their own vehicles. A new research borne out by Sharif university issues that in countries where petrol is heavily subsidized by authorities, using personal car has been sought options in majority of cases. On the one hand, in order to tackle the pressing problem of traffic congestion, the government should allocating a heavily budget on public services so as to be accessible for all individuals irrespective of their level of income or social status. Regarding governmental regulations, authorities should put tax on petrol price; indeed, evidence reveals that governmental regulations are promising to curb people excess. Not to mention that governmental measures combined by people participations can be more effective than when individuals' role would be dismissed; so, there should be a raise in individuals' consciousness about ripple ramification of a chronic high volume of traffic congestion. In conclusion, traffic jam can be caused by poor condition of infrastructures and the government should combat this problem in alliance with individuals.

Traffic congestion is a critical issue in plenty of cities and towns around the world. From my perspective, there are a lot of factors which are the main reason for traffic, and the government have a prominent role in this circumstance. To begin with, world’s population is booming and unfortunately isn’t keeping pace with the infrastructure which in turn leads to traffic jam. It is not fallible to say that the narrow streets and roads are the most important reasons of the high volume of traffic. The more population, the more cars, as cars have become more affordable and accessible than in the past. Additionally, it is painfully obvious that the public transport is not well-organized and, in majority of cases people are faced with accidents that happened by public transportation; unsurprisingly, it eroded people’s trust and confidences; thus, when people move around by public services feel always danger. Moreover, petrol prices are not high enough, and people prefer use their cars, because it is more confident and confront them with the least accidents. For example, an article conducted at Isfahan University Of Technology revealed that countries with more affordable cars and petrol are more suffering from traffic jam. The government could play an active role toward this issue. First of all, infrastructure should grow at the same rate within population; thus, the administration must allocate a large part of its budget to construct and develop the wide roads and streets which in turn leads to an increase in the capacity. It is worth noticing that the public transport must be subsidized and equipped by reliable facilities that is reducing majority of hazards and gain the trust of the passengers. The cars and petrol prices should be mounted by the government to entice people to use more public services instead of personal vehicles. Thereby, the administration should take sustainable measures toward traffic congestion and impose some restrictions on using the personal cars. For instance, traffic limitations on peak hours and crowded streets can be a preventative measures. Provided throng roads are equipped by well- organized transport, the traffic jam will be decreased. All in all, although growing population put an unprecedented strain on infrastructure and lead to traffic issue, the administration must take radical actions to anticipate this problem which is getting worse and worse.
